Bombyx

Bombyx is the kit that allows you to breed the larvae of the Bombyx mori species, better known as silkworms.

Duration of experience: about 35 days.

History of silk

The silkworm breeding begins to be practiced in China, around 4000-3000 BC. Legend has it that her birth was due to Empress Xi Ling Shi. After a cocoon accidentally fell into the hot cup of tea, she noticed the filament that could be obtained from it. The breeding of worms and the cocoon processing method for centuries were kept secret by Chinese emperors who wanted to maintain to maintain a monopoly on the production and sale of this precious product. Despite this, in later times, the silkworm breeding spread throughout the rest of the world, playing a role of primary importance in the economy of our country until the second post- war period.

The bug

The silkworm is an insect belonging to the order of Lepidoptera. The current scientific name is Bombyx mori or Mulberry silkworm. The silkworm is an "artificial" species: it would not exist if it had not been bred and selected for millennia by man. It is believed that the starting wild species was Theophila mandarina, a nocturnal butterfly present in various areas of Asia.
